Sculptor of Private Cathay Williams “Buffalo Soldier”

Private Cathay Williams (1844–1893) was the first African American woman to enlist in the U.S. Army, serving under the alias “William Cathay” in the Buffalo Soldiers’ 38th Infantry Regiment. Disguising her gender to enlist, she demonstrated remarkable courage and resilience, paving the way for future generations of women in the military. Sculpture by Eddie Dixon.
