“The Drummer Boy” Buffalo Soldier

During the era of the Buffalo Soldiers, drummer boys, typically aged 10 to 18, played a crucial role in military operations by using drumbeats to relay commands and signals amid the chaos of battle, such as marching, attacking, or retreating. While admired for their bravery and patriotism, their young age also evoked sympathy as they faced the same dangers and hardships as adult soldiers. Despite their vulnerability, they were respected for their dedication, courage, and ability to maintain order and communication on the battlefield, often receiving mentorship and protection from older soldiers. The Drummer Boy: Buffalo Soldier by Robert Jackson depicts these young musicians’ significant contributions and the challenges they endured while serving alongside the Buffalo Soldiers.
