U. S. Pattern 1872 Cavalry Saber and Scabbard
U.S. Pattern of 1872 Cavalry Saber and Scabbard is a remarkable artifact reflecting 19th-century craftsmanship and military design. This piece features a polished steel scabbard adorned with ornate brass belt mounts, a drag, and a throat. Its hilt is an elegant composition of black leather and brass wire wrapping, complemented by decoratively designed elements, including the quillon, knuckle bow, and pommel. The polished steel blade bears the marker's name “C. Lombardi & CO. / NEW YORK,” stamped prominently on the ricasso. Measuring 39.25 inches in total length while in the scabbard, the hilt itself is 5.5 inches long, with the blade extending 32 inches. This saber is an excellent example of the artistry and utility combined in cavalry weaponry of the period.
