Woolen Sack Coat
Woolen Sack Coat, dating from around 1875-1885, is a 5-button sack piece typical of an officer's jacket, as indicated by its interior quilting. It features "chicken wing eagle" buttons, which are known for their cost-effective production. Made of wool, this single-breasted coat is waist-length and shows signs of age with tears and holes. Evidence on the sleeves and shoulders suggests the presence of chevrons or rank shoulder straps.
Notes: Cavalry and artillery shell jackets remained in use after the American Civil Wars due to their practicality for mounted troops compared to long frock jackets.
