Late Civil War to Early Frontier War Military Bugle
Bugle features its original red worsted wool cording wrapped around the tubing, indicating its use for mounted artillery. This double twist bugle, crafted from brass, dates from the late Civil War to the early Frontier Wars period. The saw-tooth soldering and dovetailing are characteristic of mid-19th-century brass and copper instruments. The bugle is in good condition, showing some "dings" from field use on the bell.
Notes: Bugles were crucial for battlefield communication. In the mid-19th century, machinists and instrument makers could not extrude a single metallic pipe, so bugles were made from large sheets of copper and brass. These sheets were hammered over a form and soldered with dovetailed seams to form the instrument's tubing.
