Artifact A-008A
Frontier War Issue 10th Buffalo Soldier Trade Token
Artifact A-008B
“Remember the Maine” Spanish-American War Token
Item A-008A is a Troop B token from the 10th Cavalry dating back to the 1880s. Used at Fort Apache, Arizona, it served as a 10-cent trade currency, displaying a charming patina like a nickel in size.
Item A-008B, minted in 1898, is a quarter-sized coin marked "007 N7.& It features a small hole, perhaps for wearing as a pendant. One side shows the USS Maine, and the reverse displays a flag with & Cuba Must Be Free.& Made from brass, it shows slight oxidation, enhancing its historical appeal.
Notes: Tokens were vital in the Old West, providing change where coins were scarce and convenient to soldiers. At Fort Apache, founded in 1871, tokens supplemented coinage until the post-exchange closed in 1922, following
heavy involvement in the Frontier Wars.
