1878 Round Bullseye Tan Canvas Water Canteen


Item 1A is a well-preserved cup from the Frontier Wars era, marked with a "U.S." stamp on its handle. Standing 4 inches tall and wide, it shows minor corrosion and handling dents, holding approximately 24 ounces. Item 1B dates back to the 1800s Civil War and Frontier Wars, measuring about 4.25 inches wide (including the handle) and 3 inches tall. It displays a vintage patina and minor dents from field use and holds around 16 ounces. These cups were essential in soldiers' mess kits, used for cooking soups, brewing coffee, and stewing, tied to belts, knapsacks, or haversacks during military operations.


Notes:

The U.S. Canteen used by Buffalo Soldiers played a crucial role in their daily lives and military operations. It provided hydration and sustenance during marches, patrols, and battles, indispensable for maintaining their physical well-being and combat readiness in challenging environments.
