Cavalry Chevrons, Frontier Wars
The exhibit features historically significant Cavalry Chevrons from 1872 and 1884, representing hierarchical insignias worn by esteemed members of the U.S. cavalry. The collection includes three sets: one for the Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant, First Sergeant, and Corporal (1884), and another for the Lance Corporal (1872). Crafted from durable cavalry wool, each chevron boasts vibrant yellow hues with meticulous black chain stitching outlining intricate patterns. These chevrons serve as relics of military history, embodying honor, duty, and tradition synonymous with the cavalry of yesteryears, offering insight into military regalia heritage.
Notes: Early chevrons indicated grade and branch of service: RED for Artillery, BLUE for Infantry, and YELLOW for Cavalry, reflecting military ranks during the Civil War and Frontier Wars.
